On a hot Summer's morning, 13year old Arjun Sai presents a lively Vocal Kutcheri at the Nageswara Rao Park

It is the second Kutcheri in phase two of the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park that had been launched in February 2006. The Summer’s peaking and the Sun’s out early this Sunday morning on the first day of May.

Guru Vaidyanathan is at the Nageswara Rao Park just after 6.30am with his student 13 year old Arjun Sai. Interestingly, the Violin and Mridangam artistes of the day have also trained under the same Guru, a unique case at the Sunday Kutcheri of all the three artistes having learnt under one Guru. 

Sundaram Finance’s Company Secretary P Viswanathan arrives at 7am and is seated on his customary stool under the tree while a long time regular at the Kutcheri Diesel Finance Head Sriraman as ever is on the last row quietly enjoying the vocal presentation of this class VIII student of Chellammal Vidyalaya Senior Sec. There is an overseas visitor as well and as is usually the case, the cameraman clicks the surprise one in the audience .

Accompanied on the Violin by Avantika Saravanan and on the Mridangam by Sarang Raghavan, Arjun presented compositions that included Thyagaraja Swamigal’s Narada Guru Swami (Darbar/Adi), Muthuswami Dikshitar’s Kayarohanesam (Karnataka Devagandhari / Rupakam), Shyama Sastri’s Triloka Matha (Paras / Adi) and Lalgudi Jayaraman’s Tha Tha Dhim Tha dhim (Madhuvanthi/Adi).

Mikeless Kutcheri becomes a Group Initiative

The Sunday Kutcheri in the Park that had started off in February 2006 as an initiative of the NBFC Sundaram Finance Ltd., has from this Kutcheri become a Group initiative. Another new addition to the backdrop was the addition of the photograph of the month’s artiste!!!

Viswanathan’s comes on to the stage at 8am to present certificates and mementos to the artistes and the Guru.

It has been a memorable morning for Arjun Sai and his parents and relatives are thrilled at the opportunity handed out to him by the Sundaram Finance Group. After this experience, the Guru promises to bring on stage many more talented youngsters.

13 year old S Shwetha, the great granddaughter of Mridangam Vidwan Palghat Mani Iyer, was eagerly looking forward to presenting her first Mikeless Kutcheri on the first Sunday of April 2020 but the national lockdown in the last week of March that continued into the first fortnight of April meant that her dreams were dashed(https://sundaykutcheri.blogspot.com/2020/04/lockdown-sunday-kutcheri-cancelled.html).

It has been two years since the calling off of that Kutcheri in April 2020. Finally with the Pandemic behind us, Sundaram Finance decided to relaunch the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park under the leadership of the new MD Rajiv Lochan. After two years, the chess square was once again buzzing this Sunday (April 3) morning with a beautifully decorated flower kolam welcoming music connoisseurs to the re-launch of the Mikeless Kutcheri series. 

Rajiv Lochan was at the Nageswara Rao Park by 6.45am. He was soon joined by former MD TT Srinivasaraghavan, the man who was instrumental in the launch of the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park way back in February 2006.

In a way it was the handing over of the ‘Mikeless Kutcheri’ baton from TTS to Rajiv on Sunday. The re- launch also drew another surprise visitor. S Sivakumar, former VP of Sundaram Finance, had been present through the 14 years of the Sunday Kutcheri and was a key member of the audition team that chose artistes for the Kutcheri in that period. He came all the way from Pallikaranai in South Madras to be part of the re-launch.

Tippirajapuram's N. Sriraman, Head of Diesel Finance at Sundaram Finance, had been one who had not not missed a single Kutcheri in the years leading to the lockdown in March 2020. He too was present on Sunday morning. In his typical quiet way, he found a seat for himself right at the back and was seen encouraging the artiste right through till the end.

For 12 year old flautist P Viswanathan, it was his debut Mikeless Kutcheri and he was all excited to present all time popular songs with the audience that sat all around him. It was a new experience for him. As the Kutcheri gathered momentum, the morning walkers at the park stopped by to applaud the performance of the young artiste. By this time, as has been the practice through the first phase of the Kutcheri, hot coffee had also begun to be served to the audience.

Accompanied on the Violin by Chittoor A Giridhar, disciple of CK Anand and on the Mridangam by B Sai Sundar, disciple of Prapancham Ravindran and under the watchful eyes of his Guru Chittoor K Pathanjali, who sat on the first row, Viswanathan presented songs that included Muthuswami Dikshithar’s Maha Ganapathim, Oothukadu Venkatasubiyer’s Alaipayuthe Kanna, Thyagarajar’s Ninnuvinna and Vasudevayanni and Purandaradasar’s Bagyadha Lakshmi Bharamma. The final song on the morning of the re-launch - Bharathiyar’s Chinnanchiru Kiliye - almost had the audience in tears.

Rajiv Lochan had high words of praise for Viswanathan and told him that the day of him performing at the Sabhas was not far off.  Guru Chittor K Pathanjali was grateful for the opportunity presented to his student. 

Rajiv reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the Kutcheri series at the Park “Sundaram Finance is committed to continuing the monthly Sunday Kutcheri in the Park series at the Nageswara Rao Park providing opportunities to talented artistes. In the first 14 years, the mikeless kutcheris had served as a stepping stone for many budding youngsters and our endeavour is to provide opportunities to children aged below 15 to showcase their musical talent and  help them gain confidence by performing in an informal setting with the audience sitting around the Chess Square of the Nageswara Rao Park.” 

Srinivasaraghavan presented certificates and mementos to the artistes at the end of the Kutcheri.

Happy Memories 

For TT Srinivasaraghavan, it was his first visit to the park in two years and expressed happiness at the re-launch of the Kutcheri “I am delighted to be back at the Nageswara Rao Park after two long years, for the resumption of the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park. This platform has served as a launch pad for several budding talents over the past several years and I look forward to many more of them commencing their musical journeys from this unique and charming  environ, to the accompaniment of chirping birds and rustling leaves!” 

“I vividly recall the inaugural kutcheri back in the year 2006 and it is my fond hope that we will continue to attract exciting young talent like Viswanathan who presented a flute recital this morning.”

He said that he was looking forward to 'Phase II' of the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park.

The buzz is back once again at the Chess Square of the Nageswara Rao Park. In the coming months, more artistes aged below 15 will be showcasing their musical talent at this unique kutcheri sans mikes and speakers.

The Sunday Kutcheri in the Park is organised by Sundaram Finance on the first Sunday of every month between 7am and 8am.

From a six year old in 2006 to a Dubai student performing under the Umbrellas, the Kutcheri in the Park has seen a record breaking run

The Mikeless Kutcheri in the Park series will soon be back again at the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore. Chennai headquartered Non Banking Finance Company Sundaram Finance is all set to re-launch the popular open air 'No Mikes- No Speakers' kutcheri for children after a Pandemic break of two years. On Sunday April 3,  12 year old P Viswanathan, who is learning from Guru Chittoor K Pathanjali, will present a one hour flute recital between 7am and 8am at the Chess Square of the Nageswara Rao Park. He will be accompanied on the violin by Chittoor A Giridar (disciple of CK Anand) and on the Mridangam by B Sai Sundar (Guru Dr. Prapancham Ravindran).

While there has been a constant lament about the lack of opportunities for young unknown artistes to showcase their musical talent, this over six decades old NBFC, known for its trust and values, came up with a unique mikeless kutcheri concept  in 2006 that sought to be a stepping stone for musically inclined children aged below 15.

‘Catch them Young’ Concept

When launched, the objective of the Kutcheri in the Park was to provide a launch pad for upcoming music artistes. The then MD TT Srinivasaraghavan (TTS), who retired from the company in March last year, said “We chose to focus on young children - ‘catch them young’ - and restricted it to children below 15years as we believed it would help them shed their inhibitions and give them the confidence to move up to the next level. The informal ambience at the park contributed to the removal of 'stage fear' in these children. For most children, the 'Kutcheri in the Park' has been their first ever Kutcheri. Many who first performed here have gone on to perform in Sabhas, during the Margazhi Season, cut their own music album and even reached the pinnacle in the Super Singer Contest.”

Why Mikeless?

Repeatedly in the initial years of the launch, the walkers at the park and the audience asked Sundaram Finance to add mikes and speakers to the Kutcheri. The company resisted the temptation with TTS repeatedly remarking "We did not want to disturb the peace of the morning walkers with loud music and hence consciously stayed away from mikes and speakers. We have to be conscious and mindful of the fact that we operate in a public place. It would be presumptuous on our part to assume that all of them are lovers of carnatic music. Therefore the first thing we decided was ‘No mikes No speakers’. We decided to do it in a confined space, whereby those who are interested can come seeking this but we will not impose this on someone who doesn’t necessarily want to be bothered by carnatic music."

Over a decade later, the Court has ruled on similar lines in a religious context  what TTS held in 2006 

"No religion ever says to force the unwilling to listen. Loudspeakers do exactly opposite of the same. Loudspeakers breach right to be left alone. It takes away the right of the citizens to speak with others, their right to read or think."

6 year old presents a mikeless kutcheri!!!

Taking the entire audience by surprise, in the very year of the Kutcheri in the Park, within six months  of the launch, sisters Deepika and Aparna, aged 6 and 8 years, presented a mikeless kutcheri that enthralled the Sunday morning walkers. It opened everyone's eyes to the reality that given the right platform and encouragement, even those as young as six could perform on  'stage'.

Overseas Aspirants

This model has also generated interest among aspirants from the US who came all the way from overseas locations to perform at the Kutcheri in the Park in Mylapore. As early as 2008, the popularity of the mikeless concept had caught the fancy of California based sisters.

Sruti and Jayshree Sarathy, who performed at the Kutcheri in 2008, have since progressed on to the next level in their music careers and have been regulars in the Marghazi Kutcheris in the leading Sabhas in the city. Back then in 2008, after their first ever Kutcheri in India, they said, “This is the first time we have sung without mikes and speakers and this is the first time we have performed in India. When we think of Chennai, we only think of kutcheris in the Sabhas. We have never heard of mikeless kutcheris and open air park kutcheris. This is a very unique concept and this was a different kind of experience for us. The audience was very close to us, unlike other kutcheries. Without the mike, we had to put in more effort and our voice came out much better. This has given us a lot of confidence. Also, we were really surprised by the big crowd that was present early in the morning and their encouragement really motivated us to perform even better." 

A Mikeless Kutcheri in the rain

A year later, three overseas students from the Middle East performed at the Nageswara Rao Park - two from Kuwait and one from Dubai. Malini Vishwanath, Guru of 13year old Raghavi of Kuwait, had said that it was a challenging platform for her student "Every voice has a genetic quality. One cannot go beyond the domain. We had worked, in preparation for this kutcheri, for almost 6 months as it was to be a mikeless kutcheri. I think Raghavi was her natural self this morning and enjoyed presenting the kutcheri in front of the informal park audience. Any young student would be deeply honoured to be part of the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park."

When Arul Priya came all the way from Dubai, the early morning rain might have led to a calling off of the kutcheri. But in an instantaneous act, the staffers from Sundaram Finance brought umbrellas and she began her performance with umbrellas held aloft amidst loud cheers of appreciation from the audience.

Record Breaking Series

Around 1400 children have participated in the mikeless kutcheri series at the Nageswara Rao Park. In addition to the monthly Sunday Concert, Sundaram Finance also organizes Mikeless Concerts during the popular festival of Navarathri and as part of the four day annual Mylapore Festival. Organised on the first Sunday of every month, the series had gone on uninterrupted for 14 years till March 2020 when the Pandemic struck. By then, the Kutcheri in the Park concept of Sundaram Finance had already gone into the Limca Book of Records as the longest running open air mikeless concert in the country. 

While the Kutcheri had gone on uninterrupted for 14years till March 2020 and the audition committee at Sundaram Finance had chosen artistes for the rest of the year, the national lockdown following the break out of the Pandemic in the last week of March 2020 meant that the Kutcheri in the Park could not be held for two years. Like the suggestions made in the early years of the Kutcheri to convert it into a 'miked' kutcheri, there were thoughts on going online with the Kutcheri concept. However the team at Sundarm Finance resisted the temptation and has stuck to the novel concept of a physical kutcheri sans mikes and speakers. 

The wait is finally over. The company has decided to relaunch the monthly series from the first Sunday of April 2022.

Rajiv Lochan, who took over from TTS on April 1 last year, is set to take the Mikeless Kutcheri concept forward into the 'relaunch' phase.

Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore should have been abuzz on Sunday morning (July 5, 2020) with the mikeless kutcheri organised by Sundaram Finance. However, the extended lock down has meant the cancellation of the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park for a fourth successive month.

In February 2007, when the Sunday Kutcheri was launched, TT Srinivasaraghavan, MD, Sundaram Finance Ltd., had said that the objective was to provide young musical talent aged below 15 years a platform to perform in front on an informal park audience and to help them shed their inhibitions and move up to next level. Two artistes who first presented a Kutcheri at the Nageswara Rao Park in July of 2010 and 2015 have climbed up the musical ladder since their debut performance at the Sunday Kutcheri.

July 2010- A Solo Violin Performance then, Now in the Sabhas

Ten years ago, on the first Sunday of July 2010, an interesting artiste presented the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park. While most often, it is vocal performance at the Sunday Kutcheri, Sundaram Finance chose an eleven year old Violinist to present a solo performance. A decade later, S. Sayee Rakshith, now a qualified ACCA, is a regular as an accompanist at the Sabhas during the Margazhi season. Last year, he went on a musical tour to the US along with Trissur Brothers. Looking back at the 2010 Kutcheri, he remembers being nervous “The Sunday Kutcheri was much talked about at that time, was well covered in the media and I remember being nervous that morning ahead of the Kutcheri.”

His Guru for the last few years Padmashree awardee A Kanyakumari, who has never charged a fee from her students, is all praise for providing the solo opportunity to a Violinist “Most often, Violinists are seen only as accompanists and are not given their due. It is heartening that Sundaram Finance presented that solo opportunity to him very early on in his career that served as a launch pad for him. In the years that I have seen him, he has shown exemplary attitude to learning, has displayed true Guru Bhakti, has rarely been distracted and has focused on improving his violin skills.”

Testimony to his musical growth can be seen from the fact that Sayee Rakshith has been her accompanist in her kutcheris in the Sabhas. Quite a creditable achievement!!

July 2015 artistes now teaches young students

5 years ago this day, Sunday the 5^th of July 2015, R Harini, a student of Shubha Ganesan, presented her first ever Kutcheri as a 13 year old at the Chess Square of the Nageswara Rao Park as part of the monthly Sunday Kutcheri.

Hairni has just completed her Class XII exams and joined an online CA Foundation course. With the lock down hitting everyone hard and restricting external movement, Harini has begun taking music classes online as directed by her Guru. Harini has fond memories of her first Kutcheri “When I was chosen for the Mikeless Kutcheri by Sundaram Finance, I was quite nervous to present in front of the park audience as it was my first public performance. But singing without mike and speakers helped me sing naturally and the feedback was generally good which gave me a lot of confidence.”

In April this year, just after the lockdown began, Harini received a big boost when her Guru asked her to take classes for students “I saw it as a big endorsement from my Guru on the progress I had made in the last five years. I have now been taking classes for three students including one from the USA thrice a week over the last three months. And it has been a good experience. It has also opened my thoughts to exploring the possibility of becoming a music teacher in the future.” 

Commending the musical commitment of Harini, Shubha Ganesan said that she was a regular even a few days prior to the Class XII exams and that she has evolved in music over the last few years ‘I showcase her commitment as a role model to all those newcomers taking to music.’

Interestingly, over the last quarter, Harini has also donned the role of Music Guru for her younger sister who now looks up to her for everything in music.

For these two, Sunday Kutcheri in the Park has served as a launch pad in their musical career.

It is just past 7am on Sunday (April 5), the morning of the first Sunday of the month when the chess square at the Nageswara Rao Park has for the last 13 years been bustling with musical activity. Sipping a hot coffee, Kutcheri buffs and music connoisseurs are seen encouraging the ‘Star of the Day’.

A Platform for Budding Artistes

Since February 2007, Sundaram Finance has been organizing a mikeless kutcheri for children aged below 15years on the first Sunday of every month. Over 200 such mikeless kutcheris have been held at the park. 11 years ago, even the rain on one of the Kutcheri mornings could not play spoilsport, for the personnel from the company held umbrellas atop the artistes so she could present the one hour Kutcheri.

This morning turned out to be one of the very few occasions when the Kutcheri has had to be cancelled.

Promise Fulfilled
13 year old S Shwetha, the great grand daughter of Mridangam Vidwan Palghat Mani Iyer, was all excited when she was informed about her selection and the opportunity to perform at the April edition of the monthly mikeless kutcheri. In September 2015, her elder sister, Sowmya had performed on the same stage, a kutcheri that Shwetha watched

She enjoyed it so much that she promised to herself that she too would perform one day at this prestigious platform for budding artistes. Her sister, who first performed at the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park, has now moved on and become a graded artiste at the AIR.

Early morning practice

Since this was to be a kutcheri sans mikes and speakers, her Guru Palghat Shri TR Rajaram directed her to practice early in the morning so the voice comes out better. And leading up to the kutcheri, she had been practicing each day for 2 hours in the wee hours of the morning.

And then came the call from the organisers that the Kutcheri was being cancelled given the extraordinary developments worldwide ‘I was initially a bit disappointed at the cancellation. But when I thought about it, I soon realized that this was understandable as the decision was being made as a precautionary measure.”

She is now looking forward to performing at the same stage sometime in the near future once things get back to normal. While external circumstances forced the cancellation of her first full fledged Mikeless Kutcheri, her mind was all on what might have been. And in a symbolic token gesture, Shwetha has put out a video with a few lines of a song that she would have presented between 7am and 8am at the Nageswara Rao Park this first Sunday of April.

As part of the monthly Sunday Kutcheri in the Park organised by Sundaram Finance on the first Sunday of every month, 14 year old Shreyas Murali, student of Guru G Ravikiran, presented a vocal Carnatic music Kutcheri this morning between 7am and 8am at the chess square of the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore.

Accompanied on the Violin by C. S. Chinmayi and on the Mirudangam by R. Vinoth, Shreyas presented compositions that included Sriman Narayana (Bowli – Adi), Teliya Leru Rama  (Dhenuka – Adi), Evvari Maata  (Kamboji – Adi) and  Maithreem Bhajata (Ragamalika – Adi).

Shubha Ganesan, presented a lively Mikeless Kutcheri this morning between 7am and 8am at the chess square of the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore. The Kutcheri marked the beginning of the 15^th year of the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park that was launched in February 2006. Around 1400 children have been part of the Mikeless Kutcheri at the Nageswara Rao Park.

Accompanied on the Violin by G. Vagadeeshwar and on the Mirudangam by S Aniruddh, Mahathi presented compositions that included Sakthi Ganapathim (Nattai / Rupakam), Kanchadalayadakshi (Kamalmanohari / Adhi), Sri Venu Gopala (Darbar / Kanda Chapu), Sarasaksha (Pantuvarali/ Adhi ) and Madharpirakkanniyanai (Kurinjippan).

15 students from Madura Ganalaya present a lively Kutcheri in the Park on Sunday Morning

Launched on the first Sunday of February 2006, the monthly Sunday Kutcheri in the Park organised by Sundaram Finance has completed 14 years on Sunday ( Jan 12). Around 1400 children have been part of the Mikeless Kutcheri at the Nageswara Rao Park during this period. To mark the occasion and on the final morning of the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival 2020, 15 students from Madura Ganalaya presented a lively one hour Kutcheri in the Park, without mikes and speakers, at the Nageswara Rao Park in front of a big Sunday morning audience that had gathered around the chess square. 

The students presented songs that included Karimuga, Mayilmeethu, Raghuvamsa, Pandurithiko and Venkatachala

TT Srinivasaraghavan, MD, Sundaram Finance said ‘When we launched the Kutcheri in the Park 14 years ago, our idea was to make this a stepping stone for budding musical talent and to help young ‘unsung’ children aged below 15 years shed the initial inhibition that we normally associate with stage performances by giving them a platform to showcase their talent in an informal environment. Many have gone on to the next level in their musical career. That for us is very heartening.’ 

On the Mikeless Kutcheri concept, Srinivasaraghavan said, ‘We have resisted the temptation to use Mikes and stuck on to the ‘Mikeless Concept’ for we believed that an open-air kutcheri, amidst falling leaves and curious birds chirping around the park, would bring out the best in the children if they performed without the help of mikes and speakers.’

Talented children from the US, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Pune and Bangalore have also presented mikeless kutcheri at the Nageswara Rao Park over the last 14 years.The monthly Kutcheri in the Park is restricted to children aged below 15 years. Paavani Cotai Mikeless Kutcheri

Paavani Cotai, a disciple of TR Vasudevan presented a one

hour mikeless kutcheri at the Nageswara Rao Park this Friday morning on day 3 of the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival 2020. She was accompanied by Purva Dhanashree on the Violin

and by VG Visswesh on the Mridangam.

Shakthi Muralidharan presents one hour Mikeless Kutcheri 

Shakthi Muralidharan, disciple of Guru Smt Amritha Murali and Guru Smt Sattur Lalitha Santhanam , 

presented a Mikeless Kutcheri this morning between 7am and 8am at the Nageswara Rao Park.

She was accompanied on the Violin by Haritha Narayanan and on the Mirudangam by Sannath Parameswaran.

Sruthilaya Students mikeless kutcheri

Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival 2020 launches with a Group Mikeless Kutcheri at Nageswara Rao Park

15 students from Sruthilaya School presented a one hour Mikeless Kutcheri this Thursday ( Jan 9) morning at the Nageswara Rao Park to kick off the 18^th edition of the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival. Mikes and Speakers are not used at the Kutcheri in the Park.

The students, who are learning music from Guru Suresh Raman, presented theme based songs on ‘Mylai’ that included ‘Padame Thunai’, Karpaga Vallinin, Karunai Theivamey and Karpaga Manohara.

P Viswanathan, Company Secretary, Sundaram Finance presented certificates and cloth bags to the artistes and a memento to the Guru.

Niveditha Mikeless Kutcheri

As part of the Kutcheri in the Park organised by Sundaram Finance on the first Sunday of every month, 13 year old Niveditha Doraiswamy presented a one hour Mikeless Kutcheri this morning at the chess square of the Nageswara Rao Park, Mylapore. She was accompanied on the Violin by Mukundan Samraj and on the Mirudangam by Abhinav Kailasam.

Niveditha presented compositions that included Thyagaraja’s Siva Siva Enaradha (Pantuvarali/Adi), Papanasam Sivan’s Maa Ramanan (Hindolam/ Rupakam), Dikshithar’s Sri  Subramanyaya Namaste (Kambhoji/Tisra Ekam), Annamacharya’s Bavayami Gopalabalam (Yaman Kalyani/Khanda Chapu) and Bharathiyar’s Parukkulle (Jonpuri/ Adi). 

S Dhandayuthapani, GM - Operations, Sundaram Finance presented certificates and mementos to the artistes.

Launched in February 2006, the idea of the Sunday Kutcheri in the Park is to provide opportunities to young budding talent aged below 15 years to present in front of an informal park audience. Ramcharan Navarathri Kutcheri in the Park

14 year old Ramcharan presents Mikeless Kutcheri at Nageswara Rao Park

On the concluding day of the three day Navarathri Kutcheri at the Park series organised by Sundaram Finance, 14 year old K. Ramcharan presented a one hour mikeless kutcheri on Sunday ( Oct 6) morning at the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore.  The Kutcheri in the Park is restricted to children aged below 15 years. 

Ramcharan, disciple of Smt. Geetha Raja and Sriram Parasuram was accompanied on the Violin by Mugundan Samraj and on the Mirudangam by A Rohith. 

Applauded by the audience comprising of morning walkers and Sunday Kutcheri regulars, Ramcharan presented compositions that included Thyagarajar’s  Girirajasuta (Bangla/Deshadhi)   Muthuswamy Dikshithar’s Marakathavallim (Kambhoji/Adi), Papanasam Sivan’s Sivakama Sundari (Mukhari/Adi) and Harikesanallu Muthiah Bhagavathar’s Raja Raja Rajithe (Niroshta/Adi).

This is the 11^th year of the Navarathri Kutcheri at the Park. Sundaram Finance has also been organizing monthly Kutcheri in the Park on the first Sunday of every month since February 2007 and during the four days of the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival. No mikes and speakers are used. Over 1300 children have presented concerts at the Kutcheri in the Park.

On day two of the Navarathri Special Mikeless Kutcheri organised by Sundaram Finance, 14 year old Vibha Krishnakumar, disciple of Smt. Geetha Raja, enthralled the audience at the Nageswara Rao Park with a lively Saturday (Oct 5) morning Kutcheri at the Chess Square.

Accompanied by C. Akhilesh on the Violin and by A Rohit on the Mirudangam, Vibha presented songs that included Muthuswamy Dikshithar’s Maha Ganapathim (Nattai/Eka), Hiranmayim (Lalitha/Rupakam), Thyagarajar’s Amma Ravamma (Kalyani/ K. Chapu) and Bharathiyar’s Vellai Thamarai (Bhimplas/Adi).

Arvind Navarathri Mikeless Kutcheri

13 year old Arvind Balaji presents a Lively Kutcheri in the Park

On day one of the three day Navarathri Kutcheri in the Park series organised by Sundaram Finance, 13 year old Arvind Balaji presented a lively Mikeless Kutcheri, amidst chirping birds and falling leaves, on Friday (Oct 4) morning between 7am and 8am at the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore. 

Arvind, a student of B. Uma Sankar, was accompanied on the Violin by Mugundan Samraj and on the Mirudangam by Sai Srivats R Kamath. 

Arvind presented compositions that included Mathe Malayathvaja (Kamas/Adhi), Karunai Seivai (Hamsadwani/ Desh Adhi), Nadasudha (Arabhi/Roopakam), Shankari Shankuru ( Saveri/Thisra kathi Adhi), Annaporne Visalakshi (Sama/Adhi) and Mathangi Raja Rajeswari (Ramapriya/Roopakam).

13 year old N Ananya, a student of Guru Smt. Indira Raghavan, presented a lively one hour Mikeless Kutcheri amidst chirping birds and falling leaves on a cloudy Sunday (Sept 1) morning at the Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore.

Ananya was accompanied  by Parun MK Ananthalakshmi on the Violin and  by S Anirudh on the Mirudangam.

She was accompanied on the Violin by T Kishore and on the Mirudangam by A Rohith.
